Analysis Of The Novel I Believe Mda - 1763 Words

In terms of the past part of the novel, I believe Mda presents a nonbiased account of both parties’ views, showing that he does not favor one side over the other. However, it is important to note the fact that Mda was exiled, spent years in Lesotho and America, and The Heart of Redness is the first novel he wrote after returning to South Africa (â€Å"Zanemvua†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ). This fact could be a sign that Mda may have more of a personal connection to the Believers in terms of their culture and tradition, because Camagu also has recently returned to Africa from America and is relearning about the importance of his culture. Camagu is an educated man, but still â€Å"regrets he never learned the freedom dance,† because Africans do not respect him for not taking†¦show more content†¦However, Mda does propose the benefits to civilization as well. He asserts the UnBelievers’ view that there are vital elements civilization can bring them, seen as the idea of ‘progress’ rather than complete civilization. The UnBelievers think of the clean drinking water, health services, and a possible self-reliant economy they could achieve by accepting some British ways (Mda 116). As a result of Mda balancing the Believers’ desire to preserve their land, and the UnBelievers’ ideas on progress, it seems he is a neutral author, rather than on the side of either group. The same nonbiased view from Mda is also evident with showing the bad and the good of Believers’ desires. He shows how there are negative things from staying in the status quo, the lack of basic provisions, and falling behind the rest of their world, which the UnBelievers fear. However, Mda presents the value in the Believers’ traditions. NoPetticoat, Bhonco’s wife who is an UnBeliever, has a change of heart near the end of the novel and starts engaging in the traditional ways of the Believers. He writes, â€Å"[NoPetticoat] loves the clothes of the amahomba†¦ She has grabbed herself the freedom to enjoy her pungent tobacco.† (Mda 260). My Personal Statement On Friendship - 1053 Words

Friendship is exceedingly imperative to me and has been an immense influence on me and my life. The way it has impacted me has changed dramatically, starting in fourth grade when I was accepted into Quest, the advanced program in my school district. In fourth and fifth grade I made friends with a majority of the other kids in Quest. We were all quite close. We hung out all the time. At recess the entire class played capture the flag together, apart from the rest of the classes in our school. We always stuck up for each other. We were like a family. The changes and continuities with my relationships have sculpted my outlook on friendship and how I feel about my friends. In sixth grade, however, I was cyber bullied by one of the other girls in Quest. This was a turning point for me, and I started wondering if the girls in Quest were only friends with me out of obligation. I started to think of them as my family in the way that we were forced to be together. We were always around each other and had no other choice except to be friends. I realized that I probably would not have been friends with many of them if we were not in Quest together. It also gave me numerous doubts about if they truly liked me and wanted to be friends with me. In middle school, I made another realization. I was very different than everyone else. Minorities hold less than half of all top positions in businesses today. It has been proven in many studies that white males manage most all of corporate America. This is why America had to put things such as affirmative action in place, which requires companies to hire a certain amount of minorities each year by law. This is why when you fill out a job application today they ask for your ethnicity. There are open-minded white and black people that know this type of treatment is going on in their place of business, but they fail to say anything because they fear that they may lose their job. I feel that Dr. King would be embarrassed to stand next to most of our leaders today. I feel this way because Dr. King preached about the community needing strong, reliable, and honest leaders; today we find that most of our leaders are very far from these values. For example, people in government lie all of the time during elections. Basically they tell you what you want to hear so that they can get your vote, and once they get in office the do the total opposite of what they promise they would. Also for example, former President Bill Clinton, he got on national television and stated that he did not have sex with Monica Lewinski. The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is usually associated with related concepts like stakeholder management, corporate social responsiveness, and corporate citizenship. All these concepts refer to a company’s responsibilities outside its main purpose that involves generating a profit (Blackburn, Doran, & Shrader 195). A primary reason for the multifa ceted nature of CSR is that it binds society and business. It requires no extensive study to understand the different debates over social responsibility occurring across society. Two major concepts appear to be vital to the understanding of social responsibility, namely sustainability and responsibility (Clegg & Rhodes 53). Sustainability is a standard concept on the external and internal environment as regards intangible and tangible resources. Intangible resources, such as skills and knowledge, must be recognized and developed. Tangible resources, such as oil and raw materials, should be utilized with precise care and, preferably, substituted by alternatives and reused (Anderson 18-20). It is in the interest of the company to thoroughly care for the pooled intangible and tangible resources and to manifest this in its operations. On the other hand, responsibility today implies not just economic, but also environmental and social responsibility. Companies are persuaded to surpass th e economic perspective and consider a broader framework. This challenge may be viewed as indirect or direct societal demands to integrate environmental and social principles into business activities (Anderson 24). In recent times, it has become somewhat widespread to define this responsibility as CSR.
